Polling stations in Calgary closed down and Calgarians have to wait for results on Olympic bid vote

As polling in Calgary was closed on Tuesday and Calgarians waited on an edge to see the results which would point to a no or yes on pursuing Olympics bid for Calgary in the year 2026.

Scott Hutcheson, BidCo. chair, said that waiting for these plebiscite results reminded him of the time when he was a ski racer.

Hutcheson said that he and his colleagues just finished the race and were waiting to post the times on board. Hutcheson also said that he has lots of nervous energy.

Scrutineers for no camp reported a victory for No, but in advance polls, those with Yes camp remained at an optimal level.

“We all know that we got creamed into advance polls,” said Stephen Carter with Yes. But Catriona LeMay Doan, an Olympian said that the time is right for Calgary to host Winter Games once again.

She said that our province and community need this stimulus and which will start in June right away.

“This matter is not just about sport, we need to grow on this and have a legacy and keep this alive for more 30 years.”

Voter turnout was too impressive on Tuesday, that approached to a level of interest which was very close to the contentious municipal election of last year, as lineups wound outside of community halls and rec centers with over 160,000 Calgarians casting ballots.

Michael Vanderkruk, who voted at The Vista Heights School said that the turnout has been very amazing.

Nearly at 5 p.m., over 153,000 Calgarians cast a ballot, and 157,000 tallied at around 6 p.m. during 2017 civic election.
